Patented January 5, 1904, this is the printed patent drawing for a game  board invented by Lizzie J. Magie, a variation of which would later  become the board game “Monopoly.”

The patent above was for The Landlord’s Game.   It was designed to show the economic principles of Georgism and how the system of renting property impoverished tenants.  Lizzie sold the rights to The Landlord’s Game to Parker Brothers for $500 in 1935.  Parker Brothers sought the rights to the Landlord’s Game so that they could sell Monopoly without infringing on Lizzie’s copyright. (Monopoly was directly based on The Landlord’s Game.)
